Teach boys about periods

My mother also talked about periods to my brothers.

When I first got mine I had terrible cramps. Crippling cramps. I once was camping with my family and a few of my big brother’s friends when my period came. My cramps were so bad that my mom gave me a full pain killer ( I was 13 and before that she only gave me pills cut in half).

I literally laid down on my parents’ air mattress and cried in pain for an hour before the pill kicked in.

My brothers friend came in to the big tent and I was just curled up and sobbing. Now, I was quite the tomboy and was known to rough house with my brothers and their friends and made sure I wasnt seen as just “a little girl.” So my brother’s friend was confused to see me openly weeping in the fetal position (seriously, these were the worst cramps I have had in my life. My vision went white). He asked what was wrong with me.

My big brother stood up immediately and suggested a nice long hike. During this hike I am sure he had a pretty awkward conversation with his friend explaining menstrual cramps, because when they got back the pain pill had (mostly) kicked in and I was sitting up at a table when my brother’s friend sheepishly asked me if I was feeling better. I said I was better, and he said good.

When we made s'mores that night my brother and his friend kept me well supplied with chocolate.

Making sure sons know as much about periods and menstruation as daughters makes them better brothers, better sons better fathers, and better men. A man that understands a period will not lightly accuse a woman of “being on her period” if the woman is in an argument.

Raise better sons Teach them about normal bodily functions.

HIT REBLOG PLEASE

this reminds me of that post about that dude who carries tampons with him at the gym because “half the world menstruates” and “you will build a whole guest room in case your friends want to stay the night but you won’t carry tampons in case they start their periods unexpectedly” or something and honestly they both give me life. <3

My periods are crazy unpredictable and sometimes they get really bad. One time in college i was sitting with my project team in our lab space and i went up to my friend to ask her for a pad. It was one if those crazy bad ones and i’d gone through my supply, and the student store had closed by now so i was kind of desperate. But i quietly asked her and she said she didnt have one. One of my teammates, a cis dude, was like “what did you need?” And of course i was like “dont worry about it man its cool haha”

And then he like, looked me in the eyes and was like “no, really, what did you need?” And at this point i assumed he must have at least partially heard me, so i said it again, kind of breaking eye contact and saying it under my breath just bc thats what ive been socialized to do around dudes, and when i turn back to look at him he had just pulled one out of his backpack and handed it to me, like it was no big deal, because really it wasnt.

Dude saved my life that day.

Trainability in cats is a funny thing.

My cats understand and will obey a number of verbal commands, one of which is “go away”. I don’t use it often, but if they’re bugging me and I’m trying to work or doing something that could be dangerous for cats, I can tell them to go away, and off they go - they’ll only keep pestering me if there’s a serious problem they need me to look at.

That said, their idea of a serious problem that requires my attention is somewhat eccentric. Previous instances have included:

  • There was an unfamiliar car parked across the street
  • Their water bowl was four inches to the left of its usual position
  • One of them had puked on the stairs and they didn’t want to walk past it
  • It was raining
  • One of them saw a weird bug

These are all very important things that required your attention. They’re doing a good job.

Dogs really aren’t much better.  I teach all my dogs the command “show me”.  How it works is if the dog needs something but I’m having trouble understanding what exactly they’re trying to tell me, I say “show me” and they lead me to whatever the problem is.  Usually they lead me to a real problem (like a toy that got stuck under the couch, their water bowl is empty, etc).  But sometimes they want me to fix things like this-

  • They pulled the covers off my bed and now they want me to put the covers back
  • They put their ball on top of the ottoman but the ottoman won’t throw it for them
  • The cat is sleeping and won’t chase them
  • A flower fell off the potted plant
  • The cat is sitting in a box and they don’t like it
  • One of them lost their bandana
  • The cat won’t take the toy they’re trying to give her
  • The cat DID take the toy they gave her and now they want it back

Toddlers be like that
